Message for U.S Citizens – Extreme Caution Urged Regarding Recent Gang
Violence U.S. Embassy Belmopan, Belize April 27, 2012
This
message is to inform U.S. citizens in Belize that the U.S. Embassy urges
the exercise of extreme caution when attending any public events or
gatherings with large crowds as a result of the recent high-profile
gang-related murders in Belize. Security information
also indicates that there could be gang violence at the National
Agriculture and Trade Show (NATS) which takes place in Belmopan from
April 27-29, 2012. U.S. citizens could expect to see enhanced security measures implemented at the NATS and along the highways leading into Belmopan.
Caution should also be exercised in Belize City, especially the south and southwest due to areas of known gang activity.

Sad, this will scare tourists away!SMH
Maybe this will be a wake up call for the government. Sad!
The USA hand out warnings about most countries in their time, even "quaint" old England... They are always a bit OTT when it comes to these warnings. That said the Belizean Government should take note, because this will affect the tourist dollar, and that is serious money when it boils down to it. Miami in the late 70's is an example of how the tourists being driven away can cause havoc to an economy, the difference is America sorted that one out, and pretty damned quickly, before it became a real crisis!!
The problems I see is Belizeans themselves are in denial; the gangs have pretty much taken over the streets of Belize City, gun shots every single day,and night from a population of under 75,000. This is incredible!!!!
5th in the world and just a year or two ago, Belize was ranked as the 10th. Worse than Guatemala & Jamaica? That's crazy to me. It seems as though the leaders need to get out of denial as well as the citizens. Crime has increased all over Belize. It's not just concentrated on the Southside of Belize anymore.
Really sad day for Belize; so much to offer the world, but hopeless leaders.
